Summary The primary purpose of the work is to prepares works of art on paper (prints, drawings, and bound volumes) and photographs for exhibition, loan, and storage. This position functions as the Museum Specialist within the Division of Conservation and under the Chief Curatorial and Conservation Officer. Responsibilities As the Museum Specialist, you will: Mat and frame work of art on paper and photographs in the National Gallery of Art collection, and as authorized, on new and proposed acquisitions and works of art on loan to the Gallery using accepted conservation materials and procedures while maintaining the aesthetic standards established by the Gallery. Prepare special housings for the display and storage of bound volumes. Assist the Head of Paper Conservation and other Matting and Framing Specialists in the coordination of matting, framing, and installation activities associated with exhibitions, loans, and storage, including the supervision of temporary contractors. Inform the Head of Paper Conservation of all problems or schedule conflicts and work to resolve them. Assist with maintaining accurate records regarding work completed in the matting and framing studio, the location of works of art, and the documentation and inventory of frames and supplies. Maintain the proper storage of works of art on paper and photographs in the National Gallery collections correcting any problems identified by conservators and curators. Qualifications Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-1016-9/11. GS-9 For this position, specialized experience must be equivalent to the GS 7 level in federal service or private sector, hinging, matting, and framing works of art on paper (i.e., prints, drawings, and photographs of all types) using accepted conservation materials and procedures for a major organization. GS-11 For this position, specialized experience must be equivalent to the GS 9 level in federal service or private sector, hinging, matting, and framing works of art on paper (i.e., prints, drawings, and photographs of all types) using accepted conservation materials and procedures for a major organization. Knowledge of how best to maintain and care of works of art on paper and photographs, correcting any problems identified by conservators and curators. In order to be rated as qualified, you must provide copies of your college transcripts. Failure to provide copies of your college transcripts may result in a rating of "Ineligible". 2 full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree related to the position at the grade 9. This position does not have a positive education requirement at the Grade 11. Education must be obtained from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign education must be reviewed by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
